Who we are?
Welcome to Backroad Herbal Remedies! I'm Shania, the owner, Herbalist, and a mom of four girls & many furry babies. I am pursuing my dream of helping others achieve health with herbal remedies. Backroad Herbal Remedies has been in business since 2019, though my experience with making herbal remedies goes back much further. I initially sold my products on Facebook and in person, aiming to bring natural remedies to our small town. Since then, we’ve shipped all over the U.S. You might have seen my store on Etsy, but I’ve since shifted my focus to developing my own brand. We are a small, woman-owned business dedicated to producing high-quality products in small batches. We grow many of our own herbs and mushrooms on our homestead. Our product range includes teas, tinctures, cordials, syrups, oils, bath salts, salves, pet products, and custom blends. Thank you for supporting Backroad Herbal Remedies!
The Story Behind Our First Tincture: Pharmaceutical Purge
-
Pharmaceutical Purge was the first tincture I created for my store, and it has a special place in our hearts. After discovering that both myself and my daughter carry the MTHFR gene, I knew we needed a natural, effective way to cleanse our bodies. This tincture was designed to help detoxify and restore balance, and it worked wonders for both of us.
-
Before Pharmaceutical Purge, I had been making herbal remedies for friends and family, helping them with their personal health journeys. But this tincture marked the turning point, where I took what I had been doing for loved ones and created something that could help the wider community. It was the first product I felt truly called to share with others, and it sparked the beginning of my business.
-
Pharmaceutical Purge is more than just a product; it’s the foundation of Backroad Herbal Remedies. This tincture not only helped me and my family heal, but it ignited my passion for herbalism and creating natural, holistic remedies. It remains a cornerstone of our mission to provide powerful, plant-based healing to all who seek it.
FAQs
Can I mix tinctures with other liquids?
Yes, you can absolutely mix tinctures with other liquids! While taking tinctures under the tongue allows for faster absorption into the bloodstream, if this isn't your priority, mixing them with other beverages works just as well. Some users prefer mixing their tinctures with creamers, which helps soften the flavor. Others choose to add honey for a sweet touch, making the experience a bit more pleasant. Additionally, some enjoy adding their tinctures to juice or even just water, which can help dilute the strong taste while still receiving the benefits of the herbs.
Do you sell in bulk and what is your ship time?
No, we do not sell in bulk beyond what we have in stock. Since all of our products are made in small batches to ensure quality, the most we’ve sold at a time for a single product is 6. Ship times for in-stock items are typically 2-5 business days. Restocks may take 3-7 business days, and custom orders, including alcohol-free versions, can take 1-3 weeks. I always strive to stay on the lower end of these estimates to get your order to you as quickly as possible.
If you were just starting your natural journey, what is the first product you'd purchase and why? What over-the-counter items would it replace?
This is an extremely tough question because it's hard to choose just one product, but if I had to, I would recommend our Travel Kit! The kit contains small sizes of 7 different products, giving you the opportunity to try a variety of our herbal remedies in one convenient package. This would replace several over-the-counter items such as ibuprofen, cough syrup, Benadryl, and more, making it a great all-in-one solution to support your health naturally on the go!
What is the shelf life and storage for your products?
The shelf life and storage requirements vary by product. If refrigeration is needed, it should be noted on the bottle. Syrups and viral tonics must be refrigerated or frozen, with a shelf life of 4-6 months in the fridge and 12-16 months if frozen. Alcohol-based tinctures have a shelf life of 5+ years when stored at room temperature, away from direct light. Alcohol-free blends last 2-3 years at room temperature. Salves typically have a 2-4 year shelf life before they begin to lose potency. Always check your product label for any specific storage instructions.
What is the difference between tea, tinctures, and the use of alcohol versus glycerin in tinctures?
Tea is a milder way to consume herbs, made by steeping them in hot water. Tinctures, however, are concentrated herbal extracts. Alcohol-based tinctures are more potent because alcohol extracts a wider range of active compounds from the herbs, making them stronger and faster-acting. Glycerin-based tinctures are gentler, often preferred for those who avoid alcohol, but they tend to be less potent because glycerin doesn't extract as many active compounds. Alcohol-based tinctures provide a quicker, more powerful effect compared to glycerin.
Can I get a refund on my order?
.Once your order has shipped or been picked up, all sales are final. Due to the nature of our products and for safety reasons, we are unable to accept returns. However, if a product arrives damaged, please notify us within 48 hours of delivery with photos. We will file an insurance claim and replace the damaged product as soon as possible. If a custom order or alcohol-free order is placed, the sale is final upon payment.

My journey into herbal medicine goes back quite a ways, but it wasn’t always as deep as it is now. When I was 9, I suffered from severe, chronic headaches that no medication could relieve. I spent a lot of time in hospitals, including having three spinal taps. At one point, I developed Steven Johnson’s Syndrome due to a medication reaction, which left both internal and external scars. I was overdosed by a pediatric neurologist, which shut down my kidneys and liver. For years, my liver didn’t function properly, but I’m happy to say it has fully recovered for the last 7 years.
After experiencing adverse reactions to vaccines, I stopped receiving them. My parents took me to an herbalist during that time, and we started incorporating more natural remedies, but I took it a step further than they did. When my oldest child was born, she nearly died from her vaccinations and I had to perform CPR twice because she stopped breathing. An older doctor tested both of us for MTHFR, a genetic mutation that makes vaccines, certain medicines, and even some vitamins toxic to us. This explained both my reactions and hers.
From there, I felt compelled to detoxify both myself and my children, which led me to fully embrace herbal medicine. I had two more children after that and made my own prenatal vitamins. After having two C-sections, I didn’t take any medication for recovery; I relied solely on herbal medicine. I left the hospital just 24 hours after my first C-section and 19 hours after the second. Now, my home is completely herbal and we no longer use any pharmaceutical medications.

Herbs work as medicine by supporting and enhancing the body's natural healing processes. They contain active compounds that interact with the body’s systems, helping to restore balance and address underlying health concerns. For example, some herbs have anti-inflammatory properties, while others boost immune function, improve digestion, or promote relaxation.
It’s important to remember that every person is unique, and what works for one individual may not have the same effect on another. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and overall health can influence how a person responds to herbs. However, the beauty of herbal medicine is that there are always options. Whether you're seeking support for stress, immunity, digestion, or other concerns, there are many herbs to explore and find the right match for your body’s needs.

I am not a doctor and cannot provide medical advice. It's important for each parent or caregiver to do their own research to determine which herbs are appropriate for their children. That being said, I offer alcohol-free blends that are specifically formulated for kids, and many of our salves and syrups are safe for children as well. I personally use tinctures with my own kids, but this is ultimately a decision that each parent must make based on their comfort level.
If you're concerned about the alcohol content in tinctures, there is an evaporation method that can be used to remove the alcohol. To do this, you can place the tincture in a warm water bath (not boiling) and allow it to evaporate for a few minutes. This reduces the alcohol content, while still keeping the herbal properties intact. Most tincture doses for children are 1 ml or less, which tends to be a very small amount, but it’s always best to check the specific recommendations for each product.
As always, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before introducing any new remedies to your child’s routine.

Many of the products I offer are grown right here on my property. I'm fortunate to live on 80 acres, much of which is full of the herbs I forage and cultivate myself. For the herbs I can't grow, I source them from other small, family-owned businesses that share my commitment to quality and sustainability. All of the herbs I use are pesticide-free, ensuring that you receive the purest, most natural products possible.
I take great care in selecting only the highest-quality ingredients, and I personally oversee the entire process from plant to product. This dedication to sourcing and quality control helps ensure that you’re getting safe, effective herbal remedies that you can trust. Your health and safety are my top priorities, and I strive to offer products that are both beneficial and free of harmful chemicals.

If you're allergic to an ingredient, simply message us, and we can create a custom order for you by removing or replacing the herb you're allergic to.
